Bringing together two male voice choirs under one roof was always going to be an exciting event for the audience. It was also an opportunity for the two choirs to compare their repertoires and performances as well as enjoying singing some items together as a group of nearly one hundred voices. As well as the two choirs there was a sizeable audience inside Leigh Road Baptist Church.
Unfortunately sickness problems within the Pontnewydd music team required last minute alterations to the programme but both choirs rose to the occasion magnificently.
The following comment from a member of the audience sums up the evening most effectively.
“There were so many highlights in yesterday evenings concert, arranged by the highly talented Leigh Orpheus Male Voice Choir and featuring the Pontnewydd Male Voice Choir, who had travelled up from Pontnewydd in South Wales to Southend the previous day. The awe inspiring sound of both choirs singing the Welsh National Anthem to end the evenings’ superb entertainment absolutely raised the rafters in the Leigh Road Baptist church.
Absolutely loved the whole concert. Being a massive fan of Male Voice Choirs I listen to various choirs on my MP3 player and even the more obscure pieces sung by Pontnewydd Male Choir were not unknown to me. What a fabulous evening ! I got goose bumps at various moments, the power when the voices reached a crescendo literally took my breath away and left a big lump in my throat.”
Both choirs performed a set in each half of the programme and each half was completed with the choirs singing together. At the end of the first half the choirs combined for Speed Your Journey and closed the concert jointly singing Gwahoddiad, Morte Christe, American Trilogy and the Welsh National Anthem. These combined performances were remarkable considering that the choirs hadn’t had an opportunity to rehearse together and were squeezed onto a small stage.
