Half Day Trip to Bury St Edmunds

28th October 2014

A log of the trip by our Treasurer Leon Kudla

13:00 hrs. A gang of mature youths gather on a street corner in Rayleigh, garbed in maroon shirts emblazened with gold, hands in pockets, kicking their heels, waiting expectantly and generally lurking. Many of the good citizens of Rayleigh cross over the road to avoid any contact.

13:15 hrs. The coach arrives on schedule escorted by our esteemed party leader and an extinguished fireman. Unexpected luxury was provided as the 16 seater coach had grown into a 33 seater, providing acres of space for all. The journey begins with steady progress towards Bury.

14:50 hrs. Arrive at the Greene King Brewery where all are keen to start the brewery tour. To our despair, as about to leave the vehicle, the coach starts off again as there is a car in our anticipated parking bay. We then circle Bury, return and attempt to park in a bay designed for a Smart car. Nevertheless, all disembark and are greeted by the brewery folk, and are invited to explore its museum before the tour. After digesting many interesting facts, the overall conclusion was that beer is good for you.

15:30 hrs. We were introduced to Susan, our tour guide who guided us through the working brewhouse, explained the process, discussed where yeast came from and where it went to, fed us on various malts and hops (indeed, we were literally eating out of her hand) explained how to turn water into liquor and filled several empty minds with relevant facts and figures. Once the tour finished, we were invited to taste several brews, which, must be said were kept and served perfectly. After customary and enthusiastic serenading of said Susan by reps from the Choir and Bob’s Barbershop Boys, we left for food.

17:30. Split into two parties, the main one sampling the delights of the Dog and Partridge, whilst the splinter group had an appointment with Mr Wetherspoon at the Corn Exchange.

19:00. Met up with Paul Lloyd, fondly remembered by many members of the Choir, who took us to the Bury St Edmundsbury MVC’s rehearsal. After a warm welcome, we were invited to join in the rehearsal, including different arrangements of Autumn Leaves and Amen and also American Trilogy, Gospel Train and Seal’s Lullaby. Their MD was very forgiving toward us and we were kindly rewarded with beverage and biscuits at the interval.

21:30. After fond fairwells, the coach departed with many dozing, but not for long, as all were moved by the voice of one of the party displaying his ceaseless repertoire of crooning songs, revealing talents, which, until this time, had been well hidden in the Bass section.

23.20. Arrived safely back at Rayleigh, where Barry Crawford, the organizer was congratulated and thanked for a truly wonderful trip.
